Union Pier

Charleston, South Carolina

The goal for Union Pier is to redevelop an existing shipping pier into a vibrant mixed use marina village, opening up and reconnecting the city to its waterfront. The new marina, serving local dinner cruises and ferry traffic along with transient slips, will become the civic center piece of the development and create a new anchor for the popular shopping district of Market Street. Surrounding the marina will be retail, residential, office and hotel uses, all opening out onto a pedestrian only promenade.  A major component of the master plan is the new cruise terminal that is replacing the existing out-of-date facility and allow for the expansion of cruise ship tourism to the city.  In order to link the new cruise terminal and marina back into the existing city in a seamless manner we evaluated the existing vehicular circulation, re-routed roads and removed existing surface parking to minimize the interaction between the car and the pedestrian.  When completed Union Pier will become a landmark waterfront development for the city of Charleston as a whole.
