Because of its successful work on the Legoland Discovery Centre at Phipps Plaza in Atlanta, Wakefield Beasley was hired by Merlin Entertainments Group to convert an existing indoor race track and gaming venue into an immersive aquarium called the SeaLife Center. Serving as an anchor space for Concord Mills, the largest shopping mall in North Carolina, the SeaLife Center’s space required total transformation to become a habitat to more than 5,000 sea creatures. Wakefield Beasley hired a consultant to perform a three-dimensional scan and survey of the existing space to ensure accurate programming of the dynamic entertainment venue. This electronic information amplified and hastened the design process and allowed Wakefield Beasley to more effectively communicate with the contractor during construction. When the 43,000-square-foot space was completed on time, the sharks, seahorses, octopi, jellyfish and rays had ample time to inhabit and adapt to their new 150,000-gallon environment. Now, SeaLife Center welcomes thousands of children, families and school groups each year, and the entertainment anchor is a destination feature at Concord Mills.
